Don’t Withdraw from UNESCO

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Don’t withdraw from UNESCO.

The Trump administration says it plans on pulling the United States out of UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural organization. The administration has blamed the withdrawal on what it claimed is an “anti-Israel bias” and “mounting arrears” at UNESCO.

The U.S. government owes UNESCO an estimated $550 million, mostly stemming from a move in 2011 to cut funding to the body as a punitive measure. The move was in response to UNESCO’s decision to admit Palestine as a member. Israel advocates have long accused UNESCO of an anti-Israel bias and anti-Semitism, criticizing the organization for describing Israel as an occupying power.

Israel is also considered an occupying power by the International Court of Justice, the U.N. General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council. UNESCO’s director-general, Irina Bokova, described the U.S. decision to withdraw from the organization as a blow to multiculturalism and the U.N. “Universality is critical to UNESCO’s mission to strengthen international peace and security in the face of hatred and violence, to defend human rights and dignity,” she stated. She also defended the organization from allegations of anti-semitism, pointing to UNESCO’s work promoting Holocaust education and teaching tolerance.

She lamented that in a time when “conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack.”

If you believe the U.S. should continue to support UNESCO, please sign this petition.

Dear President Trump,

Your decision to pull the U.S. out of UNESCO is a blow to international efforts to promote tolerance, education and peace. As its outgoing head Irina Bokova stated, “Universality is critical to UNESCO’s mission to strengthen international peace and security in the face of hatred and violence, to defend human rights and dignity.”

Across the world, thousands of people depend on UNESCO for education, and the organization’s work protecting the world’s cultural heritage is second to none. By withdrawing from such an organization, you are taking the U.S. a step closer to being an international outlier, and harming the country’s reputation abroad. We therefore demand you reverse your decision to pull out of UNESCO, and commit to continuing to support this organization.
