Drop Charges Against Charlottesville Beating Victim

Target: Al Thomas Jr., Chief of Charlottesville Police

Goal: Demand charges against Charlottesville beating victim, DeAndre Harris, be dropped.

Back in August, a video of a black man being beaten by several white supremacists in a parking garage during the Charlottesville rally was seen circulating the internet. The victim’s name is DeAndre Harris, age 20. Harris turned himself in after a warrant for his arrest was issued for unlawful wounding of an alleged victim. Since then he has been released on an unsecured bond and still faces jail time.

The allegations state Harris hit a victim with a flashlight moments before the white supremacist group began relentlessly beating Harris. Not many details of the warrant have been made public, but there is currently no public evidence that these charges are true. A number of protestors who were there during the rally have stated that various objects were being hurled from all sides and that it was impossible to tell who was throwing what. Harris’s lawyer also stated that these allegations were based off of one man’s word alone with no evidence to back it up.

Harris suffered a spinal injury and a head laceration that required ten stitches after at least five men, including a police officer in tactical gear, repeatedly kicked and beat him. Only three of these five men have been identified and charged. Sign the petition below to demand the charges against Harris be dropped.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Charlottesville Police Department,

DeAndre Harris has been charged with unlawfully wounded another protestor during the Charlottesville white supremacist rally. There is no public evidence to back up these charges besides the word of the supposed victim. During the same timeframe as these allegations, Harris suffered a brutal beating by five other protestors, only three of whom have been arrested.

This charge appears to be an attempt to confuse the public as to who is to blame for the violent protests in Charlottesville. Allowing Harris to become a victim yet again, this time in the court of law, is not only unjust but obscene. The word of one man without any hard evidence cannot be taken at face value. Many protestors who were there claim that numerous objects were being thrown into the crowd, and it was nearly impossible to tell who was responsible. The unlawful wounding that Harris’s supposed victim received could have come from anyone, with no way of identifying him or her.

Even though these allegations appear to be without support, Harris obeyed the law and turned himself in when he was notified of his warrant.

Since there is no public evidence to back up the allegations against DeAndre Harris, we demand that the charges for unlawful wounding be dropped immediately.

Sincerely,

  1. Charges to Remain! Violence Due to Hate Should NOT be Tolerated at All!

    • Gigi Middlebrook says:

The violence that was committed was DeAndre was trying to help someone not get hit by these white supremacists by hitting one with a flashlight. What happened to him was WAY worse than what he did. So NO CHARGES.

  2. Sorry CHARGES SHOULD BE DROPPED NOW! VIOLENCE DUE TO HATE SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED AT ALL! DeAndre Harris was BEATEN at a WHITE SUPREMACIST RALLY! HE DIDN’T WOUND ANYONE AT THIS RALLY, AND YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE THAT HE DID! DROP ALL CHARGES NOW!

Comparing this man’s action to what happened to him by others it is an outrage that this white supremacist is allowed to submit such a charge. Really???? DeAndre’s charges should be dropped immediately. Don’t you think he has suffered enough?????
