Thank Farmer for Suing Monsanto and Winning Landmark Case

Target: Percy Schmeiser

Goal: To thank farmer for countersuing and winning lawsuit against Monsanto, the largest producer of genetically modified organisms.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are harmful, manmade organisms that are destroying the environment and likely jeopardizing human health. Monsanto, the world’s leader in genetic modification of seeds, sues farmers repeatedly for patent infringement to put them out of business. Thank farmer Percy Schmeiser for standing up to Monsanto and countersuing, winning a major victory for natural food, the environment, and public health.

Percy Schmeiser of Saskatchewan, Canada has been growing canola on his farm for over 40 years and uses seeds from his previous harvest to replant new crops. One year, he was sued for $400,000 by agricultural biotech company Monsanto for patent infringement because his land was contaminated with the patented GMO crop, Roundup Ready Canola. Even though he never had planted these GMO seeds, the seeds are easily carried to non-GMO farms by winds or transported by normal pollen migration. Monsanto has sued countless numbers of other North American farmers whose farmlands had been accidentally contaminated with its GMO seeds. Many family-owned and organic farms have gone bankrupt from legal fees and court costs, or from lost sales because of all the time invested in court.

Percy Schmeiser decided to fight Monsanto head-on. Amidst threats and constant visits by Monsanto “investigators” on his farm, Mr. Schmeiser countersued Monsanto for libel, trespassing, improperly obtaining samples of his seed from a local seed plant and contamination of his crops with genetically engineered plants. After 10 years of a court battle before the Federal Court of Canada, Monsanto settled out of court and paid for all cleanup costs. Unlike previous court cases where Monsanto had been able to effectively implement a gag order, Mr. Schmeiser would be able to talk freely about the case and would be able to sue Monsanto again if recontamination occurred.

Spending his life savings and draining his trust account to fight this multibillion dollar behemoth, Mr. Percy Schmeiser proved that Davids can still win against Goliaths. Please sign the petition below thanking this courageous farmer for standing up to this corrupt corporation and for getting a victory for people everywhere.

Dear Mr. Percy Schmeiser,

Thank you so much for standing up to Monsanto’s evil bullying tactics of filing frivolous lawsuits against farmers to bankrupt them and shut down their businesses. Destroying the environment and risking public health with its GMOs, Monsanto is a corrupt corporation that must be stopped. Your courage and bravery in the midst of threats and financial loss is admirable.

A hero in the food movement, you fought back against this biotechnology firm that is trying to control our food supply. Standing up for your rights was a stand for farmers’ rights everywhere. Your decision to fight Monsanto in a countersuit no matter what the cost is commendable. Thank you for fighting for farmer’s rights, food rights, environmental rights and public health rights.
