Target: Chris Kluwe
Goal: Thank Kluwe for supporting gay marriage despite the anti-gay atmosphere that surrounds football
Chris Kluwe is a professional football punter for the Minnesota Vikings and unlike many athletes, Kluwe openly supports gay marriage. Many sport players do not openly address the controversial topic of homosexuality since sports have existed with the stigma that they embody manliness and dominance. Athletes are often portrayed to be the alpha males within our society, and this stereotypical portrayal should not be consistently reinforced because these stereotypes can restrain people from achieving their goals and dreams. By supporting gay marriage, Kluwe, who is a heterosexual man, breaks that stereotype and consequently encourages the community to do the same as well.
Kluwe first expressed his support for gay marriage after reading about fellow NFL (National Football League) player, Brendon Ayanbadejo’s situation with Emmett C. Burns Jr., the Maryland state delegate. Linebacker Ayanbadejo openly supported the Civil Marriage Protection Act, which allows gay couples to legally get married, but to his dismay, Burns quickly demanded the player to be silenced. Burns wrote a letter to Ravens owner, Steve Bisciotti ordering Bisciotti to do something about Ayanbadejo’s open support of gay marriage. It was Burns letter that pushed Kluwe to publicly express his opinions.
Kluwe’s rant against Burns was just the beginning of his consistent support for equal rights. Kluwe wrote many more letters and talked with some of the largest news organizations, like CNN and MSNBC in support of gay marriage. Kluwe recently posed shirtless for “Out” magazine, a magazine that celebrates sexuality and aims to educate the community about it. This decision was greatly supported by his wife, who is also an advocate for gay marriage.
Kluwe’s decision to speak out has generated a lot of backlash as well. Many people, such as fellow players and fans, state that Kluwe has spoken out of line since he does represent a team and a state. However, Kluwe has also gotten a lot of support from teammates who may not agree with Kluwe but believe that he has the right to free speech like every American. Kluwe must be applauded for his support of gay marriage because it is definitely not easy to support a controversial topic within such a macho sport like football.
Dear Chris Kluwe,
I would like to thank you for your open support of gay marriage. It must not be easy for a professional football player to support the legalization of gay marriage since football is such a macho sport. I believe that you, as well as other athletes that support gay marriage, are positively influencing and educating the community with regards to society’s attitudes on homosexuality.
Sports have been so dominated with the stigma that they are a man’s thing, and thus women and gay men must not understand it. This stereotype is dangerous because it can indirectly influence people from achieving their goals and dreams. For example, a gay boy may think that he does not belong in the sports community even though he may very much love a sport like football. By supporting gay marriage, you are helping the community break down this old and traditional stereotype and for that, I would like to thank you for being so brave.
