Stop Alleged Racial Profiling at Macy’s

Goal: Stop alleged racial profiling at Macy’s of Asian shoppers.

Employees claim they were fired because they spoke out about the alleged racial profiling by their employer, Macy’s. The company is being sued by four former employees of the New York store who state they were told to “look out for” and to “not sell to” customers of Asian descent, according to a report in The Huffington Post.

“Macy’s denies the allegations in the lawsuit filed by the former Harold Square employees. We are confident the allegations in this matter will ultimately be found to be without merit,” a spokesperson for Macy’s stated. Official store policy allows for one customer to purchase up to six units of a particular product, yet the former employees say that managers allegedly instructed sales associates to only allow one unit per product to Asian buyers. The employees were fired after they filed grievances with the union at Macy’s and took their concerns to their managers. The firm that represents the four former employees says that their termination was, “a blatant act of retaliation against those employees who dared to speak up against such unlawful racial profiling.” Sign this petition demanding Macy’s stop the alleged racial profiling of customers.


Dear Mr. Gennette,

Four employees were fired after filing a complaint with the union and speaking to managers about their concerns of racial profiling at the Harold Square location in New York. They have alleged that managers at this location have instructed them and other sales associates to limit the number of units of a single product sold to Asians. The idea is to prevent Asians from reselling the products at a profit, something beyond the store’s control regardless of who purchased the items.

We understand that the case is currently open and legal ramifications would follow an admittance of guilt, however by firing the four employees, the allegations seem more plausible. A change in company culture and additional training seems to be needed in the area of racial profiling and discrimination. Regardless of how the legal case turns out, you as the leader of the organization have a responsibility to ensure the safety of your employees by creating a diverse culture of employees as well as ethics training to your management staff along with a no tolerance policy for acts of discrimination toward employees or customers. We the undersigned demand that you end racial profiling in your stores and represent the general population in your hiring practices.
