McDonald’s Must End Ties to Deforestation in the Amazon

Target: Steve Easterbrook, McDonald’s CEO

Goal: McDonald’s must cut its ties with industries partaking in deforestation of the Amazon rain forest.

Fast-food giant McDonald’s reportedly has ties with companies directly influencing deforestation in the endangered Amazon rain forest. According to new reports, the United Kingdom’s McDonald’s locations purchase chicken from Cargill, which allegedly, according to several NGOs, has deep ties to soy plantations in the Amazon. The soy from these plantations is used to feed the poultry McDonald’s serves on its menu.

These plantations are clearing trees — entire habitats for endangered species — from the Amazon. Trees are burned so that they can be easily cleared to make room for these vast plantations. More than 70 percent of soy in the U.K. is imported from Cargill. Brazil, home of the Amazon, is where most of the soy is grown.

McDonald’s must end its ties with Cargill. The only way for Cargill to understand the destruction it is causing is for major financial backers, like McDonald’s, to raise awareness. Sign the petition and demand that McDonald’s end its ties with Cargill and help protect the Amazon, not aid in its destruction.

Dear Mr. Easterbrook,

Recent reports from environmental NGOs allege that your business partner, Cargill, has deep ties to soy plantations leading deforestation in the endangered Amazon rain forest. Thousands of acres of rain forest habitat are destroyed by fire to make room for these plantations.

I ask that McDonald’s end its ties with Cargill. It must work to protect the rain forest, not destroy it. It is time to invest in sustainable business practices.
