Target: St. Clairsville High School football team
Goal: To thank football team for honoring teammate’s recently deceased father with a tribute play.
It is such a thrill to score a touchdown in a high school football game. The St. Clairsville football team honored a teammate who recently lost his father by setting him up to score a fourth quarter touchdown. Thank the team for helping a grieving teammate honor his dad with a touching tribute play.
Logan Thompson was a red shirt freshman that had never played in a regular season game. He had just lost his dad to a stroke two days before the St. Clairsville vs. Edison game. He was still grieving and his teammates wanted to show their support. St. Clairsville High School’s Coach, Brett McLean, came up with the idea to have his players set up a play where Logan would be able to score his first touchdown ever.
The secret plan was to intentionally stop just short of the goal line on any given play, and then at the next down put Logan in the game and give him the ball. So when Michael Ferns, a star senior player who was recruited by Michigan, was on a breakaway run with only the endzone in front of him and no defender in sight, he purposely stepped out of bounds at the one yard line. Logan ran into the game and was told to just follow Michael Fern’s lead. He did, straight into the end zone. It was his first touchdown, on his first carry ever.
Michael Ferns is not just a star player, but a class act as well. This young man and his whole team put the feelings of their fellow player ahead of stats and their own glory. They cared about their fellow teammate and set up a play that touched his heart and soul and also those that were watching. Thank the team for allowing Logan Thompson to honor his father on the football field.
Dear St. Clairsville High School Football Team,
After a touchdown, the fans are on their feet screaming at the top of their lungs, and the player that just scored is swept up in a moment of glory. Your entire team decided to reserve this great moment for teammate Logan Thompson who had just recently lost his father. We applaud you for setting up a play to have him score his first touchdown as a way to commemorate his dad.
When Logan’s father passed away, your coach came up with a secret plan to come up short right at the goal line if given the chance. One of your star players, senior Michael Ferns, was sprinting towards the endzone and then suddenly ran out of bounds at the one yard line. Everyone was dumbfounded, including the referees. Then you brought Logan into the game, gave him the ball and he scored his first touchdown on his first carry ever.
Your support of your fellow teammate both on and off the field deserves to be applauded and recognized. Thank you for being such good examples of support and kindness, proving that a team’s care for each other can go way beyond a game.
