Stop Intimidating and Threatening the Free Press

Target: Vladan Vukosavljević, Minister of Serbia’s Ministry of Culture and Information

Goal: End the threats and intimidation against Serbia’s free press.

The independent, free press in Serbia is under attack by the country’s government. Outlets are being threatened, intimidated, and robbed of monetary resources, all in an effort to silence their critiques of the nation and its leaders.

The treatment of Serbia’s independent media is so bad that papers actually staged a blackout in protest. The press is viewed as the “enemy” and several outlets have already been shut down. Those that remain open face high taxes and severe advertising regulations. Reporters are even facing physical threats.

The staged blackout showed the people of Serbia what the nation will look like without a free press. Such a blackout must not become permanent. Sign the petition and demand that the government end its attack on the free press.

Dear Minister Vukosavljević,

The free press in Serbia is under attack. Threats, financial burdens, and even government-forced closures have harmed independent media outlets and their reporters. This must be stopped immediately.

A nation cannot thrive without a free press. If Serbia seeks to join the European Union and other democratic nations, its government must learn to respect the free press and allow it to do its job. Only then can a truly democratic nation, with diverse viewpoints and opinions, exist.
