Don’t Allow Dogs to Be Left Chained in Extreme Heat

Target: Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland

Goal: Make it illegal to keep dogs chained outside for extended periods of time or during severe weather.

One dog was found dead and another severely wounded after they were left tethered in a backyard in northern Queensland, Australia for the weekend without access to water. The two mastiff mix dogs had been left chained to prevent them from roaming the property while their owners, Jessica Boggs and Peter Ball, were away. The couple had failed to check that the dogs could access their water bowl, even though local temperatures were in excess of 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

To make matters worse, after the couple plead guilty to animal cruelty charges in court, they were both given a lax punishment of $500 each and were permitted to keep their remaining dog. This is partly because in Queensland, like in many parts of the world, it is still legal to keep dogs chained outside regardless of weather conditions. This cruel oversight must be addressed to prevent further loss of life.

Leaving dogs chained outside is detrimental both to their physical and mental health and it must not be permitted. Sign this petition to demand that Queensland do more to protect its dogs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Honourable Palaszczuk,

In Queensland, it is legal to keep dogs tethered outside while their owners are away, even for extended periods of time or during extreme weather. This practice can lead to deadly consequences, as seen in the recent case where a mastiff dog was found dead after she was left tied up in a yard, unable to reach her water bowl during a heatwave in Gracemere. Another dog was found on the property severely wounded after he because tangled up in his chain. The dogs’ owners were simply given a fine for their negligence, even though their actions were both cruel and irresponsible.

Dogs must not be allowed to spend hours on end in the heat, even if water and shelter are provided. Dogs who are left chained suffer greatly from both mental and physical stress, and are more likely to attack passers-by. We, the undersigned, urge you to push for tougher laws on tethering dogs and to call for stronger penalties against those who neglect their pets in this manner.

Sincerely,
