Free Kurdistan

Target: Haider al-Abadi, Prime Minister of Iraq

Goal: Honor the results of the Iraqi Kurdistan independence vote, and endorse its independence.

The Kurdish people have long demanded their own homeland, and now that dream is closer than ever to a reality. In a recent regional referendum carried out by Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), more than 90 percent of participants voted in favor of independence.

Over 70 percent of Iraqi Kurdistan’s population participated in the vote, though Iraq’s central government has refused to acknowledge the results. Instead, the central government has moved to cut Kurdistan off from the rest of the world, including threatening to close airspace to commercial flights and deploy troops to disputed areas.

If you believe it’s time for a free Kurdistan, sign this petition demanding Iraq allow the region to declare independence.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister al-Abadi,

Kurdistan has made its voice heard: it’s time for independence from Baghdad. With a turnout of more than 70 percent, over 90 percent of Iraqi Kurdistan recently voted in favor of independence. This referendum left no room for doubt: Kurdistan is no longer a part of Iraq – at least, not willingly. The only thing stopping Kurdistan from pursuing its own destiny is the threat of repression from Baghdad. Yet a conflict between Kurdistan and Iraq isn’t in anyone’s interests, except perhaps the Islamic State. We therefore urge you to acknowledge the referendum results, and take steps towards ensuring a peaceful transition to the creation of an independent Kurdistan that can live side-by-side with Iraq.

Sincerely,
