Applaud Duke University for Eliminating Statute of Limitations for Reporting Sexual Misconduct

Target: Richard H. Brodhead, President of Duke University

Goal: Thank Duke University for eliminating its statute of limitations on reporting sexual misconduct and allowing victims to come forward with accusations more than a year after the date of abuse

Duke University has decided to repeal its statute of limitations for reporting sexual misconduct. Students can now come forward any time before they graduate with accusations of sexual misconduct. Previously, if the incident was not reported within a year, the university would not investigate it.

The removal of this statute of limitations took place after much protest by the student body. Originally, the statute of limitations was a two-year period, until the university administration changed it in 2011. Duke claimed the reason for the change was so the student policy matched the employee policy. After the negative reaction that was elicited from the student body, Duke decided to eliminate the statute altogether.

Duke University has truly changed its act and enacted policy that looks out for its students. Lend your voice and thank Duke for expanding the statute of limitations and taking an interest in the rights of victims of sexual misconduct. By supporting Duke’s change in policy, you encourage other colleges and universities to follow suit and stand up for their students. Sexual assault and harassment are enormous problems on college campuses. Please join with Duke University, and make it known that victims deserve the right to be heard even a year after the incident happens.

Dear Richard H. Brodhead, President of Duke University

Your university has taken a great step in standing up for victims of sexual misconduct. By eliminating the statute of limitations for students reporting sexual misconduct and allowing them to come forward any time while they are a student, you and your university have made a stand and shown that Duke University really does care for its students.

I, and many others, hope that other universities see what you have done for your students and consider taking similar measures. Sexual misconduct on college campuses goes largely unreported. Duke University has now made it easier for victims to come forward and have their school take their claims seriously.

Again, thank you for taking a huge step in the way of victims’ rights. Hopefully other universities across the country take note and take similar measures. Your work has not gone unnoticed.
