Let Chelsea Manning Visit Canada

Target: Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Goal: Allow Chelsea Manning to travel to Canada.

Canada’s government has allegedly banned U.S. army whistle-blower Chelsea Manning from visiting the country. The revelation came shortly after Manning said she tried to cross the U.S./Canadian border at Lacolle. A few days later, the whistle-blower posted an immigration document to her social media account, which appeared to show she had been denied entry to Canada due to her previous conviction.

The document stated Manning had committed a crime that “would equate to an indictable offence [sic], namely treason” in Canada. Under Canadian law, travelers can be denied entry if they’ve committed a crime abroad that would carry a sentence of at least 10 years imprisonment if committed within Canada.

Manning was sentenced to 35 years imprisonment in 2013 for releasing classified military material, including footage of U.S. troops killing a Reuters war correspondent in Iraq. In one of his last acts in office, former U.S. president Barack Obama commuted Manning’s sentence. Her supporters argue she should have never been charged in the first place.

If you agree Canada shouldn’t hold Manning’s charges against her, sign this petition calling for her to be granted permission to travel.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Hussen,

Canadian immigration authorities reportedly recently denied Chelsea Manning entry to the country, citing her criminal record. This record was the result of Manning’s decision to release classified material that her supporters say included evidence of U.S. war crimes in Iraq. Among this material was the now-famous Collateral Murder footage, which showed U.S. troops gunning down Reuters journalist Saeed Chmagh and injuring correspondent Namir Noor-Eldeen.

The incident sparked renewed international debate over the war in Iraq, while reigniting concerns over human rights. For many, Manning is a hero, and her 35-year sentence was commuted by former U.S. president Barack Obama.

Manning is no threat to Canada; on the contrary, she is an inspiration to anyone who believes in justice and truth. Hence, we demand you ensure Manning is granted entry to Canada.

Sincerely,
