Target: Brandon Spikes, linebacker for the New England Patriots
Goal: Apologize for offensive and homophobic tweet
Recently, Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes posted a comment on his Twitter account that has caused controversy among his fans. He wrote, “I’m homophobic just like I’m arachnophobic. I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders, but I’d still scream if I found one in my bathtub!” He has gone on to defend this comment, calling it a joke and telling offended people that they overreacted.
Spikes’ tweet emphasizes a homophobic attitude that is still unfortunately present among many people. The idea that LGBT people are considered ‘other’, and are not as acceptable as ‘normal’ people, is a prevalent yet flawed view. Spikes may not have meant any harm by his comment, but promoting this attitude to his fans will be ultimately harmful to the LGBT community. Despite Spikes’ intentions, this tweet has offended many people, and will support more offensive attitudes.
Spikes responded to the controversy with another tweet, “PEOPLE !!!! It’s a joke … seriously a JOKE !!! Chill out.” He has not apologized for the original comment, and this tweet shows that he does not see why he should. He needs to take responsibility for this comment and apologize to his fans and the LGBT community.
Dear Mr. Spikes,
Recently, you posted a homophobic comment on your Twitter account. When some of your fans were offended by the comment, you ignored their outrage and criticized them for being offended. Defending the original comment as a joke is insensitive and inconsiderate to your fans.
I ask you to apologize for the homophobic comment. The comment reflects an attitude that is harmful to the LGBT community, and by tweeting this you are spreading this attitude to your fans. Take responsibility for what you said and apologize to your fans and the LGBT community.
