Defend Worker Rights in France

Target: Emmanuel Macron, President of France

Goal: Abandon proposed labor reforms.

French President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to impose a wave of reforms to his country’s labor laws, but unions aren’t happy. Critics argue the reforms will be a major blow to labor rights, and will give more power to employers to set working conditions. They will also allow for a potential rollback of pension and employment insurance benefits. Macron has defended the reforms by arguing they’re needed to make the French economy more flexible, and dismissed his critics as “slackers.”

So far, at least 223,00 people have joined protests nationwide, though unions have put the figure as high as 400,000. “I’ve been working for the past 32 years. I wake up everyday at 5 a.m. I’m no slacker and my work is hard,” protester and medical worker Serge Amely told The New York Times.

Along with slashing labor rights, critics have also accused Macron of undermining France’s democracy by seeking to pass the reforms through an executive decree. The move would allow the reforms could become law with limited parliamentary discussion.

If you believe the government should negotiate with workers instead of ramming through these reforms, sign this petition demanding Macron back down.

Dear President Macron,

We call on you to abandon your planned labor reforms, and instead negotiate with workers and unions to improve living standards for the French people. While you’ve argued your reforms are needed to boost the economy, the real question is: whose economy? That of the rich, or of average French workers?

These reforms will gut worker rights and empower employers to set conditions, not to mention potentially pave the way for a rollback of pension and employment insurance benefits. None of these measures are in the interests of ordinary French workers. It’s time for you to abandon this executive order and begin sincere talks with workers and their representatives.
