Protect Threatened Coral Reefs from Damages of Pollution

Target: Martin Alegria, Chief Environmental Officer, Department of the Environment, Belize

Goal: Protect the threatened coral reefs of Belize from pollution, development, and tourism.

A coral reef that stretches through Mexico, Belize, and Honduras, once regarded as a prime example of a preserved coral reef, is threatened by tourism, pollution, and development. Off the coast of Belize, 90 percent of species in the Caribbean coral reef have survived. However, this can change very quickly.

Researchers and conservationists warn that pollution caused by tourism, development, and even oil drilling will threaten the species in the coral reef, as well as the ecosystem the coral reef supports. Human waste from tourism also makes its way into the water.

The success of the reef is due in a large part to grassroots movements by ordinary citizens. However, they need help from their country’s government to ensure that the reefs remain protected. Sign the petition and demand that the government of Belize work to enact legislation to protect the coral reef.

Dear Mr. Alegria,

The coral reef off the coast of your country, one of the largest in the world, has long been regarded as one of the best-preserved coral reefs in the world. More than 90 percent of its species thrive. However, pollution from tourism and development has threatened this reef.

The preservation of your reef is thanks in large part to grassroots movements by ordinary citizens. However, they need your help. I ask that you and your government enact legislation that will help protect these coral reefs.
