Allow Repressed Citizens Independence

Target: Mariano Rajoy, Prime Minister of Spain

Goal: Respect the outcome of Catalonia’s independence referendum.

Spain’s northern region of Catalonia is currently preparing for a vote on whether to declare independence, but the government in Madrid is doing everything they can to stop it. At least 14 Catalonian officials have been detained and local government offices raided by federal authorities in connection to preparations for the vote. The government in Madrid maintains it won’t respect the outcome of the referendum, while Catalonian officials have accused the administration of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of repression. The head of Catalonia’s pro-sovereignty government, Carles Puigdemont, has even compared the current political climate in Spain to that under the Franco dictatorship.

“We will not accept a return to the darkest times. The government is in favor of liberty and democracy,” he tweeted following a series of raids on the offices of a number of high profile independence advocates. Critics claim Catalonia’s planned referendum is illegal, despite polls showing around 70 percent of the region’s population support independence.

If you believe the Spanish government should respect the will of Catalans, sign this petition demanding they allow the referendum to go ahead.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Rajoy,

Catalonia is currently preparing for a historic vote on whether to leave Spain, but your government is pulling out all the stops to halt the referendum. Arrests, raids and a crackdown on independence advocates won’t stop Catalans from demanding independence from Madrid.

This leaves you with two options: either double down on more repression, or give Catalans their day to decide their own future. We urge you to respect the will of Catalonia, and allow a free and fair referendum to take place. We also urge you to respect the outcome of the vote, whichever way it goes.

Sincerely,
