Save Elephants From Electrocution

Target: Ian Khama, President of Botswana

Goal: Prevent wildlife from accidentally coming into contact with live power lines.

A herd of nine elephants was electrocuted by overhead power lines while drinking water coming from a broken supply pipe outside a village in Botswana. The elephants are believed to have escaped from a local game reserve and were desperate to slake their thirst when they walked into the lines, knocking them into the water below.

Botswana is an arid country, meaning that wildlife will tend to congregate in large numbers wherever water is made available. If power lines are located near areas where water may be present, or if they are not tall enough, this could result in deadly and tragic consequences, as seen with these elephants.

Africa is home to many large animals, including elephants and giraffes. Many nations, such as Botswana, are also rapidly developing, which can pose new safety concerns for wildlife. In the process of making sure rural areas are connected to the rest of the world, Botswana must ensure that the many species that call this African nation home are not put in harm’s way. Sign this petition to ask that regulations be put in place to protect elephants and other wildlife from the dangers these power lines pose.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Khama,

Nine elephants were electrocuted after they knocked overhead power lines into a pool of water near a village. The entire herd died as a result of this tragic accident that calls into question the safety risks these power lines pose to wildlife in Botswana.

In making sure that all residents of Botswana have access to electricity and other modern conveniences, it is important to also ensure that wildlife are not put at risk. Because of the dry climate of your nation, areas where water may accumulate are particularly dangerous, as these are locations where animals tend to gather. We, the undersigned, ask that you call for regulations to help prevent tragedies such as this one, which claimed the innocent lives of these elephants, from occurring again in the future.

Sincerely,
