Reinstate Regulation Against Broadcast Monopolies

Target: Ajit Pai, Chairman, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Goal: Demand that the FCC reinstate regulations that create a diverse media and prevent broadcast monopolies.

The Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG) announced in May that they are working on the acquisition of Tribune Media Company. If this purchase is successful, SBG will own 215 stations across the U.S., focused only in highly populated areas and where the ownership of other broadcast stations already resides with SBG. To put it simply, the Sinclair Broadcast Group will own nearly all local broadcast stations in highly populated areas.

This virtually eliminates competition and gives SBG complete control over what information is presented to the public on any news channel and the context in which it is presented. Derek Turner, research director of Free Press, a media advocacy group, says, “The local broadcast television news is still how most Americans get information about what’s going on both nationally and in their local communities. The concentration of that medium in the hands of a few companies… would erode the diversity of opinions and the diversity of antagonistic sources of opinions that Americans need in order to have effective democracy.”

The announcement of SBG’s intention to purchase Tribune Media Company came only a few short weeks following the deregulation of how many stations one broadcasting company could own. Chairman of the FCC Ajit V. Pai was appointed by President Trump in January and has since been working to deregulate the media industry. Sign this petition demanding Mr. Pai reinstate regulations that allow for a diverse media and prevent broadcast monopolies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Pai,

During your tenure as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, many regulations have been rescinded on your demand. These regulations have been put in place to help protect the general population from propaganda being presented as news and the subsequent one-sidedness that often exists when news outlets are controlled by one main organization. Since your appointment and deregulation of the FCC, the Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG) has positioned themselves to control the information that is broadcast across new outlets in populated areas by purchasing its competitors. SBG is the perfect example of what should not be allowed in the media.

Businesses such as the Sinclair Broadcast Group are in existence to push their agenda and be profitable. It is your job as chairman to ensure that the Federal Communications Commission is providing protection through regulation of broadcast companies. It is your job to not allow broadcasting companies the ability to monopolize both the ownership of the stations and the message of the media. We, the undersigned, demand that you do your job and reinstate the regulations that create a diverse media and prevent broadcast monopolies.

Sincerely,
