Punish Official Who Shot the First Wild Bison Seen in Germany in 250 Years

Target: Chris Heinrich, Board of Directors, World Wildlife Fund

Goal: Seek justice for exceedingly rare bison hastily murdered.

Charges have been laid by the conservation group World Wildlife Fund (WWF) against an official in eastern Germany who reportedly ordered hunters to shoot a bison he claimed was a danger to the public. According to WWF, this was the first wild bison spotted in the country in 250 years. The animal was spotted near the river Oder near the town of Lebus, and the person who spotted it alerted authorities. Reports say that the head of Brandenburg’s public order office then ordered the bison to be killed in the interest of public safety.

The European bison is the largest land mammal found in Europe, and have not been seen roaming wild in Germany in over two and a half centuries. The animals are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and are considered highly protected animals in Germany.

Polish authorities suspect that the animal was one seen inhabiting Ujście Warty National Park on the German-Polish border for some time before wandering into Germany. According to Brandenburg Environment Minister Jörg Vogelsänger, the animals are not known to be dangerous. He went on to say that bison roam freely in Poland, and if they were a true hazard, “half of Poland, where the animal is a national symbol, would have to be declared a danger zone.”

A representative for the Environment Ministry said that a tranquilizer dart, available at any country vet, could have been used to neutralize any danger to the public. The order to kill this animal therefore was not only incredibly cruel, but made hastily and without proper consideration. Sign the petition below to demand that this person is punished to the fullest extent of the law if found guilty of wrongdoing.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Heinrich,

The first wild bison seen in Germany in over two and a half centuries was recently shot by hunters at the order of a German official. The bison is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and are considered highly protected animals in Germany.

This decision was cruel and hasty, especially since authorities say that the bison could have been tranquilized and moved easily. We, the undersigned, ask you to seek the maximum possible punishment for the person responsible.

Sincerely,
