Stop Natural Gas Company from Pumping Wastewater Beneath Neighboring Residential Land

Target: Southwestern Energy Co.

Goal: Stop pumping toxic waste underneath private residential lands in Independence and Faulkner counties

The Houston-based Southwestern Energy Co. has recently come under public scrutiny for illegally disposing of liquid waste beneath residential land without residents’ prior knowledge or permission. The toxic by-products of hydraulic fracturing–more commonly known as “fracking”–pose enormous health risks to local communities and environments when not disposed of properly. And rather than dispose of this oilfield waste within the boundaries of the law, Southwestern Energy is flooding its neighbors’ land with it.

In order to extract natural gas from deep beneath the ground, drillers must inject fluids under high pressure in order to fracture underground rock. A portion of those fluids bubble back up to the surface, leaving energy companies to dispose of them. Residents in Arkansas’s Independence and Faulkner counties now claim that Southwestern Energy has been pumping these waste fluids underneath their property without permission, forewarning or compensation.

The drilling fluids used in natural gas extractions are notorious for containing harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde and methanol. No citizen should have to live with such dangerous chemicals being pumped beneath their land on a daily basis. Southwestern Energy has so far denied that they are at fault, but the blame in this case is clear. Tell Southwestern Energy to own up to their illicit waste disposal practices and stop polluting the local community at once.

Dear Southwestern Energy Co.,

As a major supplier of natural gas, you have a responsibility to ensure that your company employs safe, responsible business practices that fall within the boundaries of the law. But recent reports from residents of Independence and Faulkner counties in Arkansas claim that your company has been flooding private land with the toxic by-products of fracking.

No private landowner deserves to have their land polluted by formaldehyde, methanol, and other vile chemicals without their knowledge or consent. I demand that you stop pumping wastewater under the property of private citizens immediately and formulate responsible waste disposal protocols to avoid future interference with privately owned property.

  1. Daniela Bress says:

Not only beneath residential lands, stop pumping untreated wastewater into any part of environment.

  2. There’s no excuse for ever putting polluted water into the ground. If it’s too expensive to restore the water to its original clean state, then move your capital to clean energy production.
