Declare Gender Violence Emergency in Mexico

Target: Jose Antonio Gali Fayad, Governor of Puebla

Goal: Declare a Gender Alert in the state of Puebla.

Nineteen-year-old Mara Castilla was allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered before her body was dumped in a ditch. Her killing has prompted nationwide protests, including in the state of Puebla where she lived.

Activists say more than 80 femicides have taken place in Puebla since the start of the year, making it one of the most dangerous states in Mexico for women. This has prompted activists to demand the state’s governor declare a ‘Gender Alert.’ Much like a state of emergency, the alert would free additional public resources for investigating violence against women, along with new protections for victims. Sign this petition to demand the alert be issued.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Gali Fayad,

More than 80 suspected cases of femicide have taken place in the state of Puebla this year, making it one of the most dangerous places in Mexico for women. The latest victim, Mara Castilla, was 19 years old when she was allegedly brutally murdered by a ride-hailing service driver. However, activists say she won’t be the last, arguing Puebla is only getting increasingly dangerous for women. We demand you take a stand against this rising tide of misogynistic violence and issue a Gender Alert. The alert was created specifically for situations such as that of Puebla today, and would free up additional public resources to combat violence against women.

Sincerely,
