Target: Mike McQueary, former football coach at Penn State
Goal: Apologize for not reporting the rape of a minor to police officials
Jerry Sandusky, former assistant coach at Penn State University (PSU), was recently convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse of a child. The key whistleblower in the case, Mike McQueary, reported one rape incident he personally witnessed to his employers, but he didn’t tell the police. Demand a public apology from Mr. McQueary for witnessing the rape of a child yet failing to report it to authorities.
Mike McQueary was a graduate assistant initially, but eventually became the wide receivers coach of Penn State’s college football team. One night in March 2002, Mr. McQueary headed down to the team’s locker room and found Mr. Sandusky raping a young boy in the showers. He did not say a word, and walked out.
He returned 2-3 more times, each time finding the young boy being victimized. He left and waited until the next day to report it to head coach Joe Paterno, who then told school officials. The incident was buried and never reported to police.
Jerry Sandusky was the sole perpetrator of multiple sexual assaults on young boys, but he had several people to help him cover up his crimes. University officials and head football coach Joe Paterno knew of Mr. Sandusky’s propensity to sexually abuse children and yet they all looked the other way.
Mr. McQueary was the only eyewitness in the entire case. He saw and reported the rape of the young boy to university officials, but never to the police. Mr. Mike McQueary should apologize for his silence and protection of child rapist Jerry Sandusky.
Mike McQueary had a moral obligation to go straight to the authorities. And he could have tried to stop the rape. Mr. McQueary also never followed up on the incident even after continuing to see and work with Jerry Sandusky for the next ten years. By allowing this crime to go unreported, several other young boys were eventually attacked and molested at the hands of Jerry Sandusky.
Please sign the petition below urging Mike McQueary to do the right thing and apologize to the rape victim that he betrayed so long ago.
Dear Mike McQueary,
Penn State University’s sex scandal came as a major shock to students, alumni, fans and the public at large, but not to you. You knew about Mr. Sandusky’s predatory ways, witnessing firsthand his rape of a little young boy. But you made no attempt to stop the rape, nor did you call the police, further endangering this little boy and several others. It is horrendous to think that you just left the building and then waited to tell your coach until the next day.
Was this innocent little boy just an afterthought? You were a strong, young, and healthy 28-year-old, and a former star football player; you probably could have stopped a nearly 60 year old man’s attack on a young boy, or at least scare him off. You did tell university officials, but you never followed up on that, continuing to work side by side with Jerry Sandusky, knowing that he was still “close” with young boys. This essentially made you an accomplice to the school’s massive cover-up.
That little boy’s soul was scarred and ravaged by Mr. Sandusky and you had the power to not only stop his rape, but also to prevent the rape and sexual attacks of multiple other young boys that occurred for the next nine years. Please apologize to the victim for turning your back on him and the other victims that eventually followed.
