Firefighter Who Allegedly Posted Racist Rant Must be Fired

Target: Board of Trustees, Franklin Township

Goal: Fire volunteer firefighter who allegedly said he would rather save a dog than a black person.

A volunteer Firefighter in Ohio has been suspended after allegedly posting racist comments on social media. He reportedly stated that if he had to choose between saving a black person or saving a dog from a burning building, he would choose the dog. According to The Huffington Post, he went on to post on his Facebook page, “That’s because one dog is more important than a million n****rs.” Tyler Roysdon is a 27-year-old white male volunteer for the Franklin Township Fire Station in Ohio.

Township officials have suspended Roysdon indefinitely, however, the only entity with the power to fire him is the Board of Trustees. As a volunteer firefighter, Roysdon only gets paid if he is called out by dispatchers. Officials have ensured that he will not be called out anytime during his suspension. Roysdon has since removed this post which is said to have contained multiple racist slurs.

Racism is a constant demonstration of hatred in the U.S. and often leads to violence. Citizens have a level of expected safety when it comes to emergency responders such as firefighters, police, EMT’s, and Emergency Department workers. It is always a disappointment when our country continues to demonstrate the inability of our professionals to behave professionally on or off the job. Sign this petition demanding the Ohio Franklin Township Board of Trustees fire Tyler Roysdon and raise the bar of service men and women to professional behavior.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Board of Trustees,

Tyler Roysdon has publicly demonstrated poor judgment and racism. He has reportedly blatantly stated that he would neglect to perform his duty in case of a fire and has admitted that he would leave a human being in a life-threatening situation to die if that person were black. This is unacceptable and far below a level of unprofessionalism. Mr. Roysdon appears to be a racist individual with no business being in any position that would require him to make a judgement call regarding the life of another human being.

We are thankful for the immediate action taken by the Township Officials of Franklin in suspending Mr. Roysdon before he could do further damage or further endanger the lives of our citizens. It is time to send a message to our neighbors and the country that racism will not be tolerated in any emergency responder service providers, including fire departments, police departments, and EMTs who have a responsibility to human life to preserve and protect. We the undersigned demand that you immediately fire Tyler Roysdon and investigate any and all calls that he has responded to in order to ensure no wrongdoing or injury due to lack of judgment or racism on his part.

Sincerely,
