Justice for Amazon Tribe for Allegedly Massacred

Target: Pablo Luz de Beltrand, Federal Prosecutor of Brazil

Goal: Investigate, and if necessary, charge miners accused of killing 10 indigenous people in the Javari Valley.

A group of Brazilian gold miners with an unusual bar story have garnered international attention after they allegedly bragged about killing a group of indigenous people.

According to The New York Times, the miners claimed they were forced to fight for their lives when they encountered a group of indigenous foragers in the isolated Javari Valley. The foragers were from an uncontacted, categorized tribe, and activists say their deaths could be a major blow to their remote community. Moreover, the brutality of the story has prompted outrage in Brazil.

“They even bragged about cutting up the bodies and throwing them in the river,” said Leila Silvia Burger Sotto-Maior, a coordinator from Brazil’s agency on indigenous affairs, Funai.

Brazil’s indigenous peoples have long been at odds with miners, along with loggers and ranchers who have lobbied to open up more ancestral land to industry. If you believe these indigenous people deserve justice, then sign this petition calling for a thorough investigation into this latest case.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Beltrand,

As the prosecutor overseeing the case of an alleged killing of indigenous foragers in the Javari Valley, you have an obligation to ensure justice is done. However, there’s a reason so many indigenous Brazilians are skeptical of authorities — activists claim indigenous killings all too often go unpunished. Indeed, investigations are difficult in areas such as the sprawling, isolated Javari Valley. This is especially true when the victims are members of an uncontacted tribe living beyond the frontiers of mainstream Brazilian society.

However, the alleged killing of 10 people cannot be swept under the rug or ignored. We call on you to thoroughly investigate this case, and prosecute any guilty parties.

Sincerely,
