Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Thank the governor of California for creating a digital library for university students to download free textbooks
California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed a bill to develop digital textbooks for the most popular university classes. A second related bill will create a digital library allowing students to download their textbooks for free. College tuition is rapidly increasing beyond what many students can afford, especially when taking into account additional expenses for books and supplies. Governor Brown deserves gratitude for acknowledging the steep fees that students face and working to correct the problem.
The price of textbooks has been increasing faster than the inflation rate, resulting in many students trying to get through classes without buying the textbook, or even dropping courses because of the price of the textbook. Although creating the content of academic textbooks is expensive and time consuming, publishing companies are also aware that students have no choice but to spend money on the textbook that the professor assigns, so they see no reason to stop raising prices.
Many students save money by buying their textbooks used, but publishers continually put out new editions, limiting the availability of used books. The companies also tend to bundle textbooks with extra materials, such as CDs, which increases the price and gives the student no choice but to pay for the entire package.
Students currently have very few choices when it comes to paying for college. Students who attend community colleges to avoid the rising tuition of universities often find that school is still unaffordable when the price of textbooks is taken into account. Receiving a higher education can improve quality of life, and everyone deserves the opportunity to obtain a degree. California and the rest of the country are still a long way from offering free higher education, but this is a step in the right direction. Thank Governor Brown for acknowledging the importance of education by taking measures to decrease student fees.
Dear Governor Brown,
I would like to thank you for approving the development of a digital collection of free textbooks for university students to download. Tuition rates have become unaffordable for many students, and any decrease to their yearly expenses is helpful in allowing them to continue attending classes.
Publishing companies take advantage of students and the lack of choices when it comes to buying textbooks, and they find ways of forcing students to pay outrageous prices for their books. The creation of a free digital library shows students that California is on their side, and that education is more important than catering to the needs of publishing companies.
Obtaining a college degree can have a significant impact on the amount of success and happiness a person enjoys in life, and everyone deserves the opportunity to attend a university. Offering free textbooks will give more Californians the chance to achieve their academic goals, and will result in a more educated and successful society.
