Commend the City of Austin for Supporting Same-Sex Marriage

Target: City Council Members for the city of Austin, Texas

Goal: Thank the city for supporting same-sex marriage

In a landmark decision, the city of Austin, Texas has unanimously approved a resolution to support same-sex marriages. While it is only a resolution and has no legal standing at this time, it signals that as a city Austin approves and supports same-sex marriage. Austin is now the only city within the state to take such a groundbreaking move in a state not known for its forward thinking policies.

The official stance of the state of Texas has been decidedly against marriage equality since 2005, when the state passed an official amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman only. Though the law has been challenged and taken to court multiple times, all efforts to overturn the law have been very unsuccessful. In a state that has gotten continuous attention in the past few years for being unwavering in its anti-gay and anti-women stance, this development is extraordinary.

More cities, not only in Texas but also around the country, need to take a similar step and stand-up for basic human liberties, including the right to marry. Lend your voice and thank the city of Austin for being brave and bold in the midst of close-minded bigotry. Sign this petition to commend Austin and encourage other cities to make their voices known in an attempt to change larger state policies.

Dear Austin City Council Members,

Your recent move to publicly support gay marriage means so much not only to the LGBT community, but to all of us that believe every individual, regardless of sexual orientation, is entitled to the right to marry according to her or his heart and not per state approval.

Thank you for taking such a bold step in furthering human rights in your state and our country as a whole. It makes a statement that even in the places that you would least expect it, there is hope to be found.
