Stop ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ in Myanmar

Target: Aung San Suu Kyi, De Facto Leader of Myanmar

Goal: Protect Rohingya Muslims and put an end to the cruel military operations targeting them.

A security operation targeting the minority population of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state in Myanmar is, according to the UN human rights chief, “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” The military denies targeting civilians, but over 300,000 Rohingyas who have fled say they were driven out by a military bid that attacked them and burned their villages. Because Myanmar has refused access to human rights investigators, the UN has been unable to fully assess the situation, but says there are “multiple reports and satellite imagery of security forces and local militia burning Rohingya villages, and consistent accounts of extrajudicial killings, including shooting fleeing civilians.”

The Rohingyas have experienced much persecution in the past, as a stateless and mostly Muslim population in a Buddhist-majority state. According to the military, the operations targeting Rohingyas are a response to attacks on police by Rohingya militants. However, the Rohingya militant group declared a month-long, unilateral ceasefire, and the Myanmar government rejected it, claiming that to accept it would be negotiating with “terrorists.” The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called on the government “to end its current cruel military operation, with accountability for all violations that have occurred, and to reverse the pattern of severe and widespread discrimination against the Rohingya population.” Sign below to demand that the Myanmar government heed this call.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Aung San Suu Kyi,

The discrimination against and killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is a cruel example of ethnic cleansing, and must be stopped. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been burned out of their villages, attacked and assaulted, and have become refugees in need of food, water and shelter. This cannot be allowed to continue.

The Rohingya militant group behind the attack that began the military operations currently targeting Rohingyas have called for a ceasefire to allow aid agencies in, but the government has rejected even that. The UN chief of human rights as well as the Dalai Lama have both called on you to stop this violence. I urge you to heed them and immediately stop the attacks on Rohingya Muslims.

Sincerely,

It is obvious that Myanmar is still ruled by the military force. And, after all, Aung San Suu Kyi is not what she seemed to be. The Nobel Peace Prize has become a big joke … Kissinger, Obama and now Suu Kyi.
