Prosecute Dog Owners Who Abandoned Tethered Pets to Drown in Hurricane

Target: Dave Aronberg, State Attorney for Palm Beach County, Florida

Goal: Demand that the people who tied their dogs up and left them to die in a deadly hurricane receive the maximum penalty under law.

Twenty-six dogs were tied up and left to fend for themselves during a deadly hurricane. The dogs were tethered to trees and cars and likely would not have survived the storm. Demand justice for these poor dogs.

Officers with Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control rescued 26 dogs from the Palm Beach area as residents rushed to evacuate ahead of the deadly impact of Hurricane Irma. The dogs were tethered to trees and cars and could have died if not for the help of animal control officers. Twenty-three of the dogs were rescued from one mobile home park after they were abandoned by their owners.

County officials will be pursuing criminal charges against the owners who abandoned their dogs and tethered them in places where they could not escape the storm. Sign below and demand that these owners receive the maximum penalty under law.

Dear State Attorney Aronberg,

Twenty-six dogs nearly died when they were abandoned in the path of a deadly hurricane. The dogs were tied to cars and trees and left to weather the storm alone. We demand justice for these poor dogs.

Animal control officers rescued twenty-six dogs after they were abandoned in the path of Hurricane Irma. Their owners evacuated prior to the storm’s landfall and left the dogs to fend for themselves in high winds and floods. The dogs were tethered to cars and trees and had no shelter or escape from the deadly storm. The dogs are safe thanks to the officers at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. County officials are pursing charges against the dogs’ owners.

This horrific cruelty must be punished. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty in this case.

  1. These people went through a terrible thing. Having to leave everything while not knowing if their homes, jobs, or even cities would be there when they got back. That’s devastating in a way I can’t imagine. The only thing that could make it worse would be to tie up my dog and have to see them watch me walk away from them forever. As terrible as evacuation is, you take on a responsibility when you take in an animal, that means you need to be prepared for natural disasters in your area and have a plan in place for your pets. There was more than a 5 day warning. A lot of people were helping rescue pets via Facebook communications and others. You can’t convince me that there was NO choice.

  2. Prosecute these people and ban from future animal ownership! Horrific.

  3. Carol Breton says:

How disgusting they should hang their heads in shame with animals comes responsibilities I know it was devastating but they should not have been so cruel and took their animals with them.

  4. NO FEMA relief $$s for those low-lifes. And blacklisted on all Animal adoption agencies for never owning another pet in their sorry life.

  5. Lisa Zarafonetis says:

    Signed & shared❗️?

  6. As a pet owner comes responsibility of them taking care of their pets. Yes, I believe they should be punished with fines & no more pet ownership.

  7. We do NOT want repeats of such crimes against animals — abandoning & tethering animals to fend for themselves under such brutal circumstances is STUPID, sadistic & merciless — the depraved indifference to a member of your own family is beyond rationality & reason — we need to know WHO you are to include you in a Registry of idiots who should NEVER own animals!

    • Agreed! We do need their names so we can post them everywhere and people can show up to court to make sure they are fully punished! This is unacceptable and so cruel. We, the human with souls need to help stop the madness against all this crazy animal cruelty.

  8. How can someone abandon an innocent animal in such terrible conditions and tie them so that they can’t even jump to safety. This may sound terrible but i hope those people lost more than their dogs and I hope that they are punished fully for what they did. They have no souls or compassion for anything but themselves. My first concern during this catastrophic hurricane that we were going to get hit with was my kid and my furry kids. Nothing else matters to me and I can’t understand a human being not thinking that way…

  9. i live in pbc and these people need to be prosecuted and put on a register where they are forbidden from ever having control over any animal ever again.

  10. Marilyn Glasgow says:

Cretins like this only care about saving their cowardly asses, and to hell with the defenceless animals. Only creeps without a conscience can do this sort of thing. Thanks to animal control for saving these precious, innocent souls.

  11. Dirt bags! Hope they get what they deserve!

  12. Kathy Khoshfahm says:

Dave – please find and prosecute the people who left their pets tethered while they evacuated. At the very least they could have untied them and let them fend for themselves. Unfucking believable…

  13. Next time leave the people locked up to drown. Bastards should be banned owning animals for life the ones that done this.

  14. Lilian Caughlin says:

Do likewise. Ty them up and put them in a tank that slowly fills. These cretins need to be tracked down and severely punished.
