Stop Sports Teams From Making Money By Objectifying Women’s Bodies

Target: The San Francisco Forty Niners

Goal: Stop this professional sports team from selling calendars featuring their cheerleaders, which border on pornographic.

Everywhere in American culture, women are consistently presented as little more than sexual objects existing for men’s pleasure. Nowhere is this trend more apparent than in the sports world. Professional basketball and football teams, in lieu of cheerleaders, have teams of “dancers,” scantily clad women who perform during breaks in the game. Sports teams also sell calendars featuring these women in sensual poses after the style of porn stars and Playboy models.

Is it right for women to be presented in this light to the predominantly male sports audience? Is it ethical for multi-million dollar professional sports teams to exploit women in this way in order to make even more money? Does it even make sense to pair sports with soft-core pornography?

Take a stand against the sexual objectification and exploitation of women in today’s culture. Prevent sports teams from perpetuating the hurtful idea that women are objects. Let sports teams know that it is not acceptable for them to make a buck by marketing soft-core pornography to their male audiences. If pornography belongs anywhere, it belongs in pornographic websites and magazines where it is labeled as such, not in the sports world.

PETITION LETTER

Dear San Francisco Forty Niners,

I am writing to express my opposition to your sale of calendars featuring members of your cheerleading squad, the “Gold Rush”. I believe that it is not appropriate for women to be presented as sexual objects to sports audiences.

Women are human beings, with intelligence, passion, and desires, and yet everywhere in our culture they are presented as little more than sexual objects existing for men’s pleasure. Nowhere is this trend more apparent than in the sports world. Is it right for women to be presented in this light to the predominantly male sports audience? Is it ethical for a multi-million dollar professional sports teams to exploit women in this way, in order to make even more money? Does it even make sense to pair sports with soft-core pornography?

Please take a stand against sexual objectification of women, and stop selling these calendars.

Sincerely,

  1. Good idea to start a petition about this issue. I was even more happy to see that a man started it. If more men would speak up, I think the NFL would listen, and realize that men truly can get through a game without “boobies.” The only other suggestion I have is that you start a facebook page or group to bring more awareness of this issue. That way, you can provide posts to support how the NFL degrades women on a weekly basis. If you do not want to do this, I can let you know about a page that currently exists. Thank you.

I would like to assist in getting “cheerleading” in the NFL & NBA stopped. It isn’t more than dancing for the pleasure of men . There are women that love sports and have to be subjected to this in order to watch. Myself & I’m sure many women feel as I do. There may also be men that don’t feel it necessary.
