Protect Our Communities From Climate Change-Fueled Storms

Target: Jeff Merkley, Organ Senator

Goal: Open a dialogue about climate change and put safety measures in place for more powerful natural disasters.

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado addressed President Trump through the media and The Huffington Post, stating, “This is the time that the president…needs to talk about climate change.” He goes on to state, “…this is a lesson that we need protection from nature.” Mayor Regalado has declared a State of Local Emergency for Miami residents and has ordered an evacuation.

President Trump has claimed climate change is a hoax created, “by and for the Chinese.” The Miami Republican mayor believes that the record breaking storms are a result of climate change, and there is widespread evidence to back this up. According to scientists, there are several conditions that are known to contribute to an increase in the severity of extreme events and these are specifically tied to global warming or climate change. These conditions include a rise in atmospheric temperature which contributes to more rain and higher sea levels which lead to greater storm surges and higher waves when the storm hits land.

The biggest challenge in analyzing tropical storms is that most of them happen out in the sea, which requires the use of satellites to study. This means that we still have much to learn about the links between climate change and hurricanes. Sign this petition to encourage Congress to continue to fund climate change research in the U.S., open an honest and transparent dialog about climate change in Washington, and improve plans to increase public safety.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Merkley,

We would like to thank you for authoring and successfully passing the amendment to continue funding the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change during the vote on the spending bill by the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. As President Trump continues to demand a decrease in U.S. involvement of funding and research on climate change, we understand that now is the time to stand up and be heard.

Tropical storms ravage our coastline and devastate islands in their path and our leaders must consider putting into place more aggressive protocols to help ensure the safety of our people, wildlife, homes, food and water sources, and livelihood. In order to do this, we need more research and the end of corruption in the EPA. President Trump and Scott Pruitt are working to completely remove the U.S. from any and all climate change initiatives, including regulation and it must be stopped. We are calling upon you, our leaders, to continue to talk about the facts of climate change, to continue to ignore Trump’s demands to end funding for these campaigns and research programs, to hold the EPA and Scott Pruitt accountable by calling him out publicly and charging him with crimes for his failure to act in the interest of the public. We demand that the President be held accountable for his actions.

Sincerely,
