Stand Against the Slaughter of Wild Horses

Target: Thad Cochran, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations

Goal: Protect wild horses and burros by passing the amendment that prevents the Bureau of Land Management from slaughtering them.

Wild horses in the U.S. are at risk of being murdered en masse, as the House Rules Committee rejected not one but two bipartisan amendments intended to protect them. Both amendments were set to be packaged into a larger spending bill, but since they were voted down by the House Rules Committee, neither bill will make it to the floor to be voted on with the rest of the spending bill.

The first amendment that the committee turned down would have prevented the Department of Agriculture from funding horse meat inspectors, thus stopping the return of horse slaughter in the U.S. for the first time in 10 years. The other amendment would forbid any of this year’s fiscal appropriations from being used to sell horses and burros for their meat, or for any other processing into a commercial product that would result in the animal’s death or destruction.

The protections of this latter amendment, however, still have a chance to take effect. The Senate Appropriations Committee (which recently voted against horse slaughter) has yet to act on the Interior Appropriations bill, which includes restrictions on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from using its appropriations to murder wild horses. Sign below to urge the committee stand against the murder of these innocent wild animals for human consumption.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Cochran,

The Senate Committee on Appropriations must remain steadfast in its opposition of horse slaughter. Following the rejection by the House Rules Committee of two bipartisan amendments protecting wild horses from mass murder, it is more vital than ever that the Senate protect these innocent animals.

The Senate Appropriations Committee has not yet acted on the Interior Appropriations bill, which includes the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. The BLM must not be allowed to kill wild horses and burros, or to sell them off to be killed by others. I urge you to stand strong and protect America’s wild horses from slaughter.

Sincerely,

  1. What is wrong with our government?? Why do they insist on killing off every symbol of our freedom? We have to stop this before we lose forever these beautiful creatures and thus lose a part of ourselves. When it comes times to vote..remember who voted to kill off these magnificent animals…

    • 80% of Americans oppose killing wild horses and burros and want them protected and humanely managed. This is a democracy, so where are we included? For starters, the Wild Free-Roaming Horses Burros Act of ’71 clearly states that any amendments to it must be discussed in public hearings. We haven’t received these in past amendments made to this Act. Each new amendment helped to completely destroy the original protections of wild equines, which in the governments eye, makes these animals fair game in irradication. We need a moratorium to stop all criminals involved.

  2. Selena Brooks Selena Brooks says:

This world is so sickening with it’s fixable for killing every animal on this planet off. STOP IT YOUR DISGUSTING AND A POS.

    • There is evil in our gov. They just made a deal with the hungry, hungry chinese to buy our beef, which means…our horses a and donkeys will feed their blood thirst, or they the animals must go away to make room for more ranching. I don’t think we can stop this bloodshed before any more suffer and die.

  3. what is wrong with the American Gov. to allow such a thing it’s disgusting they are slaughtering an american heritage that helped build that country it and Canada were built on a horses back what the hell is wrong with a country that would do this terrible thing My Mother was an american thank god she’s not alive to see this happening she and rescued horses that were going for slaughter they are the most beautiful animal that god created and to be treated in such a way is disgraceful US shame shame on you

  4. NOT HAPPY THAT THEY ARE SELLING THE HORSES TO KILL BUYERS AND SHIPPING THEM TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO BE FOOD. UNACCEPTABLE TO TREAT GREAT LIVES LIKE THIS NOW. BAD KARMA SOON FOR THESE BAD DECISION MAKERS NOW IN OFFICE.
