Ban Sunscreen That’s Killing Hawaii’s Coral Reefs

Target: Will Espero, Hawaii State Senator

Goal: Ban harmful sunscreen from killing rare coral reefs off the coast of Hawaii.

An ingredient in commonly used sunscreen is destroying coral reefs off the coast of Hawaii. Now, state lawmakers are working to ban sunscreen that uses these harmful ingredients from beaches.

Many sunscreen brands use oxybenzone. Reports indicate that over 14,000 tons of this ingredient end up in the ocean, destroying our planet’s very fragile coral reefs. Hawaii is home to some of our nation’s largest coral reefs. Their destruction can forever impact the ecosystem.

Sign the petition and support lawmakers who are taking a stand to ban oxybenzone from Hawaii’s beaches. Let them know that you expect them to protect Hawaii’s coral reefs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Espero,

More than 14,000 tons of the harmful chemical oxybenzone are found in the oceans every single year. An ingredient in popular sunscreens, this chemical is destroying coral reefs off the coast of Hawaii.

I applaud your move to ban this chemical from your state’s beaches. I thank you for protecting our nation’s very fragile coral reefs. I hope that your fellow state officials can follow your lead. I urge you to work with them to ensure that this legislation passes.

Sincerely,
