Target: Regulatory Agencies in States with Oil Drilling
Goal: Ensure that all drills are inspected and all violations are reported
A report compiled by watchdog group Earthworks claims that inspectors hired by many states to observe oil wells and drill sites are not inspecting often enough or reporting violations in any regularity. Becoming more energy independent may be a hot button issue for many politicians, but it seems to be coming at the cost of insufficient environmental safety nets or the means to enforce them. While the oil industry disputes the claims made by Earthworks, nothing specific has been given to disprove these claims.
Some states, including New York, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico hire inspectors to evaluate drill sites; however, the Earthworks report has shown that many states simply do not have the resources to do the necessary work required to oversee these sites, let alone be able to record and report violations. The worst part is what constitutes a violation is left much up to the state’s discretion, so what may be reported in Colorado as a violation may not even make the list in Pennsylvania.
We cannot stand to allow oil companies to have this kind of leeway when it comes to the well-being of our environment. Please sign the below petition and tell states to not take on more sites than can be overseen, make sure that all violations are reported and fixed, and that proper legal repercussions are taken on companies that violate environmental protection laws.
Dear Oil Well Regulatory Agencies in New York, Pennsylvania, and all other states in which oil drilling takes place,
Oil company profits are not more important than the environment. Striving toward energy independence is a reasonable goal but not at the cost of incomplete inspections and unreported violations. There is no amount of financial gain that equals out that kind of sustained abuse to the environment already threatened by the initial act of drilling.
If you do not have the resources or ability to oversee the oil drills within your state to make sure that they are running correctly and within strict adherence to environmental safety laws, please only allow the amount of wells in which your state can oversee them. For the sites you are able to observe, please hold all inspectors accountable for doing thorough investigations and reporting any and all violations; for those violations reported, please hold the oil companies legally accountable.
Please don’t let big oil have its way with our environment.
