Applaud Free Lunch Initiative for 1.1 Million Students

Target: Carmen Farina, Chancellor, New York City Department of Education

Goal: Praise move to give all public school students a free, nutritious lunch.

Public school students in New York City will all be receiving free lunches, according to an announcement recently made by Chancellor Carmen Farina. The program, called Free School Lunch for All, aims to remove the barriers that children and parents face when qualifying for free school lunches. The program will also provide lunches for some 200,000 students in other school systems.

Over 800,000 students in New York’s public school systems — or about three quarters — qualified for free lunches under the previous program. Unfortunately, due to the stigmatization associated with qualifying, many students would not fill out and return the forms. This new program will eliminate that by giving the lunches to all students, not only less fortunate ones.

According to the Food Research and Action Center, receiving free or reduced-price school lunches reduces food insecurity, obesity rates, and poor health. Food security is also better for learning — children suffering from hunger have been shown to have lower grades and higher instances of behavioral issues. For some students, meals provided by the school will be the only nutritious meal they may have access to in a given day.

By providing free school lunches to all children, New York City’s Department of Education is giving all students a fair chance at success. Sign the petition to praise this move, which will improve food security for over a million children.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chancellor Farina,

Thanks to the new Free School Lunch for All program, 1.1 million children in public schools and 200,000 children in other school systems will receive lunch at no cost to them. This move will eliminate hunger in students who were too embarrassed to enroll in the previous program. It will reduce obesity rates and overall poor health in children, while increasing food security. Food security is linked to both better grades and better behavior among schoolchildren.

This new initiative will ensure that every student can receive at least one nutritious meal during the day. It will give each and every student a reason to go to school and a fair chance at academic success. We, the undersigned, applaud this move, which will not only help countless children, but set a positive example for school districts nationwide.

Sincerely,
