Ban Conversion Therapy for Gay Youth in California

rainbow flag

Target: California Governor Jerry Brown

Goal: Legally protect gay and lesbian youth from undergoing conversion therapy.

Historically, California has put legislation in place to protect people from discrimination. Now, the state has the opportunity to put an end to damaging “conversion therapy” methods that force gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth to undergo draconian measures to change their sexual orientation. Governor Jerry Brown only needs to sign Bill 1172, which the state Legislature has already passed.

The dangerous practice of conversion therapy is based upon the century-old disproved notion that homosexuality is a kind of mental illness that can be corrected through negative association. Youth that are subjected to this co-called “therapy” suffer through electric shocks, nausea-inducing medication and shame-filled therapy sessions.

All three of the major US health organizations — the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychiatric Association — and hundreds of other national and international medical organizations have denounced the practice of conversion therapy. Research has proven that it is ineffective and, more importantly, that it can cause serious psychological distress and even lead to suicide.

If Bill 1175 becomes law in California, it will set a national precedent for other state governments to ban this homophobic practice that has no place in the world of modern medicine, and protect thousands of children and teens from long-lasting psychological distress. Sign the petition below to tell Governor Brown to sign the bill and ban conversion therapy of minors to show the world that identifying as gay, lesbian or bisexual is not a mental disorder.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Governor Jerry Brown,

I am writing to urge you to sign Bill 1172 to protect gay, lesbian and bisexual youth from being subjected to the dangerous and archaic practice of conversion therapy, which uses draconian measures to attempt to change sexual orientation. The State Legislature has already passed the bill, recognizing that homosexuality is not a mental disorder.

Research has proven that it is ineffective and, more importantly, that it can cause serious psychological distress and has led to suicide.

Please sign the bill as soon as possible. By doing so, you will set a national precedent for other state governments to ban this homophobic practice that has no place in the world of modern medicine, and protect thousands of children and teens from long-lasting psychological distress.

Sincerely,

  1. Though the founder of Exodus International has stated that the organization would not endorse “Reparation Therapy” as a specific type of therapy to try to help people stop practicing homosexuality, he and the organization remain dedicated to helping those who wish to find a way out of the homosexual lifestyle either into heterosexuality or simply abstinence. This bill is a disaster because it would outlaw any type of counseling with this goal. Anyone one of you who thinks this is legitimate is guilty of trying to impose your beliefs on others in violation of their freedom of religion, speech and conscience.
