Mother Deer and Fawn Shot with Pellet Rifle Deserve Justice

Target: Edward Berberian, Marin County District Attorney, California

Goal: Punish a man allegedly responsible for the unjust killing of a mother deer and her fawn.

A mother deer and her baby were reportedly shot using a high-powered pellet rifle after they were found browsing in a man’s garden. The alleged shooter, homeowner Mark Dickinson, claimed he was using the rifle to “scare” the deer away, even though the animals are protected from hunting in residential areas in Marin County, California. Both deer suffered excruciating deaths and deserve justice.

Dickinson is said to have aimed his rifle at the doe and young fawn in the early morning hours after he noticed them eating his landscaping. The gun reportedly used was equipped with laser sights and a flashlight beam, which may have made it easier for him to target the quick-moving creatures. Both deer were severely injured after they were struck, and were found dead by the time animal welfare agents arrived at the scene.

There is no reason these deer should have suffered such agonizing deaths, as there are many ways to startle or scare off deer without resorting to lethal measures. Sign this petition to demand that Dickinson receive the maximum penalty for this act of animal cruelty if convicted.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear District Attorney Berberian,

A helpless doe and her fawn were allegedly killed in a shocking case of animal cruelty in Tiburon. Both deer died as a result of being shot using a high-powered pellet rifle after a homeowner was allegedly upset that they were eating plants in his garden. The deer were left to suffer unimaginable pain before succumbing to their injuries.

This is an unnecessary tragedy, as there are many ways to drive away deer that do not involve using weapons in a residential area. This man’s actions appear to have been both reckless and inhumane. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty under law if he is found guilty.

Sincerely,

  1. What a horrific act to perpetrate on such peaceful and gentle creatures. The murderers comment that he was not trying to kill the doe and fawn insults the intelligence of all those who have been horrified by his sadistic act. If the shoe was on the other foot, and someone shot HIM with a high-powered weapon,,would he,,before dying a similarly prolonged and painful death, excuse his tormentor by saying “he was only trying to scare me”? I think not!

I lived in Marin for several years. The apartment complex where I lived was near a wilderness area. Late in the summer the deer would come down and feed on the grass in our complex. Their food source starts to dry up so they come down for water/grass. One of my favorite things was to walk down to do my laundry. There would be about 6 does and their babies feeding on the green grass. Cut down on lawn care. If you live in a deer area and don’t want them eating your “flowers” put a fence around your yard. I hope he is punished for such a senseless, heartless act.
