Animal Circus Must Leave Guangzhou Zoo

Target: Huang Yingzhi, Director of Anhui Guangde Animal Circus

Goal: Stop conducting illicit business and forcing animals to perform in circus shows after the Guangzhou Zoo terminated your contract.

The Guangzhou Zoo has taken a step to protect wild animals from mistreatment by ending its wild animal circus performances, but the animal circus group is refusing to leave and continues to hold illicit performances. Zoo organizers have asked the animal circus to cease and desist, and had sent previous notices informing the circus that the lease would not be renewed and that it should be prepared to leave. The zoo even offered to help move the animals. But the circus continues selling tickets and insists that it is defending the entire circus business and that “zoos and animal circuses go very well together.”

The zoo intends to repurpose the circus arena by turning it into a science and education center, where, as the director of the zoo office says, “visitors can learn knowledge about animals at the center in a respectful way. Our aim is to show animals in the most natural state possible.” This is a worthy goal, very much at odds with the circus, which is still forcing monkeys to ride bikes, gorillas to play drums, and bears to perform handstands on high rise bars. Even more disconcerting is the statement made by the director of the circus Huang Yingzhi: “Some parents hit children to discipline them. It’s violence, but not abuse. We depend on these animals, so why would we abuse them?” This mistreatment of wild animals must stop. Sign below to demand that the Anhui Guangde Animal Circus respect the zoo’s decision and close its doors.

Dear Mr. Yingzhi,

The Guangzhou Zoo has provided you with ample warning concerning the termination of your lease. It has also provided sufficient opportunity to leave, even offering to help move the animals. The Anhui Guangde Animal Circus must respect this decision and leave the zoo.

The Guangzhou Zoo acknowledges that forcing wild animals to perform this way is cruel, and plans on showing visitors the natural way that these animals should live. Your refusal to comply is not only an illicit violation of rules—it is also a blatant mistreatment of the animals in your care who are still being forced to perform. I urge you to immediately stop selling tickets and making these animals perform, and to leave the Guangzhou Zoo.
