Demand Police Stop Shooting Unarmed Citizens

Target: Mike DeWine, Attorney General, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation

Goal: Fire Deputy Jake Shaw if he is found guilty of shooting an unarmed citizen.

News photographer Andy Grimm of New Carlisle, Ohio was allegedly shot by Deputy Jake Shaw without warning. Grimm was reportedly unarmed and had just left his office at The New Carlisle News, where he works as a photojournalist. His intent, simply, was to find a good place to photograph some lightning before it rained. Deputy Shaw claims to have mistaken Grimm’s camera and tripod for a weapon.

Grimm located a parking lot on the main street of New Carlisle, “in full view” of the traffic stop officer on duty, according to The Huffington Post. As he climbed out of his vehicle and was setting up his camera and tripod, he states that he was shot “without warning.” Shaw’s claim that he mistook the camera for a weapon says nothing of his alleged lack of warning to Grimm. Sign this petition demanding the Ohio attorney general fire Deputy Jake Shaw for irresponsible actions if he is found guilty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General DeWine,

We thank you for your service and dedication to keeping our streets safe. Your team of experts is respected among the best officers in the state and we trust that the best interest of the community is always a priority. The men and women who serve as officers in our communities are tasked with some of the most difficult decisions and situations that can change in an instant.

We are thankful that our officers are willing to put their lives on the line every day to help keep our communities safe. The officers that keep us safe are held to a higher standard and expected to exercise reasonable judgment while in the face of potential danger or threat of danger. When police officers turn on the citizenry and become the offenders, it leaves members of the community afraid, and the climate of that community becomes dangerous. Even worse is when an officer who has perpetrated a deadly offense is not held accountable for his actions.

We, the undersigned, demand that Deputy Jake Shaw is held accountable for his actions of allegedly shooting Andy Grimm, an unarmed citizen, and that the Bureau of Criminal Investigations require Deputy Shaw be fired from law enforcement if found guilty.

Sincerely,

  3. It seems the cop was trigger-happy and also quite stupid. Had he never seen a camera tripod before? Did he really think some sniper was setting up his equipment in the middle of the parking lot??
This shooting is really bizarre and scary. Like the commenter Carole I’m glad that I don’t live in America, but I fear for those that do, which includes some of my relatives.
