Do Not Deport Innocent ‘Dreamer’ Children

Target: President Donald Trump

Goal: Do not strip ‘dreamers’ of their rights by doing away with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Undocumented immigrants who were innocent children when they were brought to America, often referred to as ‘Dreamers,’ are at risk of having their rights stripped away. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program that grants Dreamers work permits, and President Trump has decided to end it. This is an extremely controversial move that even many Republican lawmakers oppose — in fact, because of this strong opposition, the White House plans to delay the implementation of the decision to allow Congress to combat it — but it will fulfill Trump’s campaign promise to crack down on immigration.

The decision has not yet been finalized, but the fate of over 800,000 people who depend on DACA hangs in the balance. Additionally, the legal process of making and carrying out this decision comes at a time when the GOP is already overwrought — between Hurricane Harvey relief, pushing for major tax reform, and trying to avoid the possibility of an upcoming government shutdown and debt default, it is unlikely that such a major change could be carried out effectively and fairly. Sign below to demand the preservation of DACA.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

The decision to end DACA is a violation of the human rights of over 800,000 people who grew up as Americans, brought to this country as children with no control over the status of their documentation. Cutting the program is not just opposed by Democrats, but by many Republican leaders as well. House Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview that DACA should not be terminated, and that Congress should pass legislation to protect the ‘Dreamers,’ and he is not the only one. As Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) tweeted, ““After teasing #Dreamers for months with talk of his ‘great heart,’ @POTUS slams door on them. Some ‘heart’…”

Congress is also facing many upcoming challenges, including a potential government shutdown and debt default, as well as dealing with the devastation of the hurricane in Texas. To add this extremely controversial and difficult decision could prevent all of these issues from being dealt with effectively. It is your duty as President of the United States to serve the people to the best of your ability. The only way to do that is not to strip away our rights and our security —’ Dreamers’ and others alike. I urge you not to end DACA.

Sincerely,
