Praise Police Station For Firing Cop Who Made Racist Joke

Target: Mike Register, Cobb County Police Chief

Goal: Praise police chief who fired cop for inappropriate commentary.

A Georgia police officer was recently fired after video footage caught him telling a woman “we only kill black people.” According to Lt. Greg Abbott’s attorney, Abbott was “attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger,” with his remark being made in jest. Police Chief Mike Register claims that Abbott was a good cop and an honorable man, seeming to have a degree of regret in firing him, but “he made a mistake.”

In a case like this, context is irrelevant. Whether or not Abbott mare the remark in jest, it was in extremely poor taste given the rash of black men murdered by police officers in the past several years. Regardless of Abbott’s prior moral standing, it has been extremely difficult for people to trust the police due to the racist killings, and a comment like his is counter-productive in regaining public trust.

The station’s decision may seem extreme, but it was doubtless the right thing to do. Sign this petition to thank the Cobb County Police for taking this incident seriously and addressing the problem of racist killings.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Register,

Thank you for terminating the officer who told a nervous woman that the police “only kill black people” and for acknowledging that the comment was in extremely poor taste despite claims of it being made in jest. The number of black men murdered by the police in recent years has been staggering, and it has sadly dashed a lot of people’s trust in the law, so it is a relief to know that your station is taking this seriously.

Lt. Greg Abbott’s actions may be small compared to others, but his comment was extremely inappropriate. We truly appreciate your taking action, and we hope you continue to battle this issue and ensure that the police put forth a trustworthy image for the public.

Sincerely,

Thank you for doing the right thing ..and I agree that there are too many racist cops and they all need to be fired and the police departments need revamping and retraining! It is a travesty of justice that so many cops have murdered innocent african americans and got away with it..it is disgusting and our police force is very questionable. This one did the correct thing..the police brutality and murders of innocent people is not a joke! This is a serious problem in our society!

The man should have been punished and retrained rather than sacked, it was a little extreme. After all, what happens to a black man or any other race who cracks a joke about a white person? I am tired of hearing that I am a white supremacist but that makes me racist which is racist in itself.

Good- he got what he deserved!! Just imagine the things he’s done and would have continued to do “in the name of the law”. There is no place for a racist whose job it is to protect the public! Let’s hope he is never allowed to be employed as a peace officer again- but I doubt it, they just allow the vicious cycle to continue.
