Protect Fish Being Killed by Climate Change

Target: Greg Sheehan, Acting Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Add fish being killed by climate change and development to the federal endangered species list.

Two species of river herring are rapidly decreasing in number due to climate change and infrastructure development. The alewife and blueback herring are experiencing declining population in rivers across the country. Only three percent of the species remain.

Fishing and infrastructure development, such as the construction of river dams, have hurt the species’ population. Pollution and climate change are also destroying the species’ habitat. These fish are unable to find food and spawn.

With the population of herring at an historic low, the species must be added to the federal endangered species list. Sign the petition and ask the federal government to protect the species so that their populations can grow.

Dear Mr. Sheehan,

The alewife and blueback herring populations are at an all-time low. Only three percent of the river herring remain, while their habitat has been limited to five percent due to fishing, the construction of river dams, and climate change.

If these fish go extinct, their disappearance from our ecosystem will have disastrous effects. I ask that the species be added to the federal list of endangered species so that they can be protected and have the opportunity to grow.

  2. Climate change is killing fish and other wildlife in massive numbers. We need to curb climate change by converting to clean renewable energy. Man has no right to cause the destruction of our precious wildlife.
