Condemn Police Union President’s Dehumanizing Remarks

Target: John McNesby, President of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5

Goal: Apologize for referring to peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters as a “pack of rabid animals.”

A police union president’s remarks at the recent “Back the Blue” rally in Philadelphia have drawn criticism for their potentially racially charged overtones. John McNesby, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5, called a small group of peaceful protesters, who had gathered outside the home of an officer accused of shooting a Philadelphia resident in the back, a “group of rabid animals.” These remarks are dehumanizing and create a false image of what really happened outside Officer Ryan Pownall’s home.

According to eyewitness and media reports, the small group of Black Lives Matter protesters who demonstrated in front of Pownall’s home had not attempted to block traffic and did not behave violently. By all accounts, they were acting well within their First Amendment rights. McNesby’s comments before a large group of police officers, local politicians and various supporters are misleading and offensive. McNesby went as far as to suggest that the protesters represented a hate group, and condemned the media for giving them attention through coverage.

Remarks such as those made by McNesby reinforce negative stereotypes and are not befitting of a representative of local law enforcement. Sign this petition and demand that he issue an apology and clarify his incorrect statements.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. McNesby,

Your recent comments at the “Back the Blue” rally in Philadelphia were both false and offensive. You referred to a group of peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters as “a pack of rabid animals” and “a hate group”, indicating that they behaved violently or posed a threat to Officer Pownall and his family. This is demonstrably false, and such dehumanizing accusations must not be perpetuated.

As a representative for law enforcement, you have a responsibility to set an example and uphold a high standard of conduct. Your remarks are potentially damaging and do not fulfill this obligation. We demand that you make an apology and set the record clear.

Sincerely,

  1. The Fraternal Order of Police apparently has quite the history of racism. Apparently they have a dim view of blacks and certain immigrants.

  2. This is completely Wrong! Black Lives Matters and so do a lot of other lives. Do the correct thing. Tell the truth now! No Excuses! Also agree with the above statement.

  3. “Ignorance and prejudice are the handmaidens of propaganda. Our mission, therefore, is to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism can, will, and must be defeated.”

  4. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

black is not a race. black is a color.

    • Gen – Thanks, that is true. We should find a better word to use than “racism” in the issue of color, such as “colorism”, which someone has suggested.
