Demand Apology from Police Department for Unwarranted Arrest

Target: La Porte Police Department

Goal: To demand apology from local police department for arresting mom on unfounded charges

One of the joys of being a child is running and playing outside. Texas mom Tammy Cooper was watching her kids play outside one delightful day when a neighbor called the police and they arrested her on child endangerment charges. Demand an apology from the police department for arresting a mom on unwarranted and unfounded charges.

Tammy Cooper moved into a neighborhood with a cul-de-sac so that her kids would be safer when playing outside. The day of her arrest, her lawn chair was set up outside as she watched her kids breathing in the fresh air, getting physical exercise and enjoying the freedom of being outdoors. After about an hour and a half, they all went inside to settle in for the evening. Thirty minutes later, officers showed up to arrest Ms. Cooper.

A neighbor had called the police to report that she was not supervising her children and had abandoned them outside. The officer ignored Ms. Cooper’s protests that she was outside and proceeded to arrest her on child endangerment charges. She was arrested in the privacy of her own home, in front of both of her young daughters and after the supposed “crime” had occurred.  Her girls were terrified and she was humiliated. Spending the next 18 hours in jail, her daughters were taken into child protective services. Charges were later dropped.

It seems that the police department would have better things to do than arrest a mom for letting her kids play outside. Time is better spent tracking down actual criminals, such as drug dealers or rapists. This ridiculous arrest lacked common sense; a warning would have done the job. This is a miscarriage of justice. Sign the petition below urging the La Porte police department to give Ms. Tammy Cooper a public apology for her arrest.

Dear La Porte Police Department,

Tammy Cooper was recently arrested and charged with child endangerment on September 2012. A neighbor contacted the police, reporting that the kids were abandoned and unsupervised. Neither was true but police officers still showed up at her house and arrested her after the fact. Please apologize for wrongly arresting this mother of two, humiliating her and terrifying her daughters in the process.

Though there was no real evidence of a crime, she was still put in jail for the night and her children were taken into custody by child protective services (CPS). CPS found no case of neglect or abuse and dropped the investigation. Later, all charges against her were dropped.

Arresting a stay-at-home mom solely based on a neighbor’s tip and without further investigation seems unwarranted and heavy-handed. Even if the children had been unsupervised for a time, a warning or slight reprimand would have sufficed. Please apologize for such an egregious assault on a citizen’s rights and for not using common sense in this matter.
