Thank Mayor Cory Booker for Revitalizing Newark, New Jersey

Target: Mayor of Newark Cory Booker

Goal: Thank Mayor Cory Booker for lowering crime, improving education and revitalizing economic development in Newark

Newark, New Jersey is a city historically known to be a hotbed of criminal activity, with rampant drug dealing and prostitution being committed out in the open. All this changed after Cory Booker was elected mayor. Thank Mayor Cory Booker for his excellence in public service which has helped to lower crime, improve the educational system, and stimulate economic growth in Newark.

After being elected in 2006, Mayor Booker added more police officers, hired a tough on crime police director, added citywide camera and gunshot detection systems, and personally patrolled the streets of Newark with a security team. His new police director created a Fugitive Apprehension Unit, which helped capture 11 out of the 12 Most Wanted Felons in Newark. From 2006-2008, murders dropped by 36%, shooting incidents 41%, rapes 30% and auto thefts 26%.   Newark was at its lowest murder rate in 2008 in over 53 years, plus saw its first murder-free month in 4 decades in 2010. Such milestones are unheard of in any city. Mayor Cory Booker is shaping Newark’s present so that it will have a bright future.

He has also improved Newark’s educational system, has approved 50 acres of new or refurbished parks, and is currently on schedule to bring in 1 billion dollars from new economic developments. Doubling the amount of affordable housing under development, he did this while still cutting the city budget’s deficit from $180 million dollars down to $73 million dollars. Because he wanted to personally experience residents’ needs firsthand, he lived in Brick Towers for 8 years, a dilapidated, rat infested, and drug dealing complex. In 2010, he personally shoveled the sidewalk of an elderly man because the daughter had asked the mayor’s office for help. And in 2012, he suffered smoke inhalation and 2nd degree burns when he ran into a burning house and saved a woman’s life. Voluntarily reducing his own mayoral salary twice, Mayor Booker has proven that he will personally sacrifice for the good of his city.

Mayor Booker’s selfless acts and positive leadership have steered Newark into a better tomorrow. Sign the petition and thank Mayor Cory Booker for his extraordinary achievements and excellent service in his role as mayor.

Dear Mayor Cory Booker,

Newark, New Jersey has long been known to be a criminal’s playground, plagued with gangs, drugs and other illegal activities. But you changed all of that when you became mayor. Thank you for your leadership and commitment to improving the quality of life for Newark residents and for making Newark a safer and better city to live in.

In less than two terms you have lowered crime, improved housing for lower income residents, cut your city budget’s deficit in more than half, improved the public school’s educational system and generated almost 1 billion dollars in new economic development. You have selflessly led the way while exemplifying the three Cs–confidence, courage, and compassion. These attributes appear to drive your decisions in both your career and everyday life.

Being a leader in reform, ingenuity and sound fiscal policies, you are setting New Jersey up to be a shining example for us to follow. Thank you for your sacrifices and determination to make a difference in your city and surrounding communities. You are proving that if Newark can do it, America can do it.
