Thank Former Pro Athlete for Offering Free Volleyball Classes to Underprivileged Youth

Target: Mr. Robert “Betinho” Bosch

Goal: To thank Robert Bosch for his willingness and dedication to help youth from the slums

Drawing the rich and famous alike to its sandy shores, Leblon Beach is a beautiful backdrop for any school. Coach Robert “Betinho” Bosch set up a volleyball school here at first with little success, but then decided to offer free classes to youth from the local slums. Thank Robert Bosch for being a positive role model and for giving rich and poor alike the opportunity to succeed in life through his volleyball school.

Robert Bosch was an exceptional athlete and rising star in the world of professional volleyball. When he competed at the youth world championships in Italy at 20 years of age, he was considered the best player in the world. But “Betinho,” as he is called, had to leave pro volleyball early due to health challenges. Wandering aimlessly for seven years, his wife suggested that he start a volleyball school and instruct kids. So he setup a volleyball court on Leblon Beach, one of Rio de Janeiro’s glamorous destination getaways. With only a few students showing up, and his only regular being his wife, Robert got an idea. He decided to offer free classes to students at the local public schools. Treating them right off the bat as pre-professionals, he worked on their technique hours at a time after school and quickly earned a reputation for excellence.

At Rio de Janeiro’s championships last year, his youth teams won in every age group. People quickly started noticing and soon kids from the wealthy parts of town were signing up and paying to play. Whether from the “favelas” (slums) or “asfalto” (wealthier areas), Betinho trains his students hard and gives them equal opportunity to shine and improve. Participants play side by side where status or income levels no longer matter, just skills and technique. They are being forced to work with and learn from others that they would not otherwise interact with. The physical activity keeps these kids’ bodies and minds active and in shape, helping them to deal with pressures and outside stresses. Teaching the value of a hard work ethic and the importance of teamwork, Betinho is preparing these youth to succeed in life.

For his dedication and commitment to the kids and to the sport of volleyball, Robert Bosch is to be commended. Please sign the petition below and thank him for making a difference in all of these kids’ lives and for impacting his community in a positive way.

Dear Mr. Robert Bosch,

Leblon Beach is a famous destination getaway, drawing celebrities, the wealthy and the very powerful to its sandy paradise daily. And now it is becoming famous for a whole other reason–your outstanding volleyball program. Thank you for helping your community and giving kids from poorer areas an opportunity that they might otherwise not have had.

Your volleyball school gives underprivileged youth hope and a place to succeed, teaching them discipline, teamwork and basic life skills. By making your school affordable and available to both rich and poor alike, participants are taught to respect and value each individual regardless of class or income level. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to these kids and for providing a fun and safe place for all.
