Harshly Punish Man for Apparently Stabbing Dog

Target: John P. Sarcone, Polk County Prosecuting Attorney

Goal: Seek maximum penalty against man who allegedly stabbed his dog.

Following investigation, a Des Moines resident was arrested for reportedly stabbing one of his dogs multiple times with a pocket knife, according to a report posted by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or ARL. Polk County Sheriff deputies responded to an animal abuse report where they found two dogs with injuries. One dog, breed unknown, had minor injuries. The other was a Pit Bull mix named Zeus.

According to the ARL, the alleged abuser, Michael Mitchell, 31, separated the two dogs who were fighting and proceeded to stab Zeus with a pocket knife. Zeus was taken by authorities to the Iowa Veterinary Referral Center, where emergency intervention and treatment saved his life. Zeus sustained “multiple stabs to the chest and side, puncturing his diaphragm, in addition to other life-threatening injuries”. He is currently being cared for by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and their team of veterinarians and medical support staff.

Mitchell was taken to the Polk County Jail and charged with one count of animal abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor. He later posted bail and was released. Sign this petition and demand the prosecuting attorney seek the harshest penalty and ban Mitchell from ever owning or working with animals again, if convicted.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sarcone,

An innocent and helpless dog was reportedly stabbed multiple times with a pocket knife by its owner. The alleged abuser has been arrested and charged with one count of animal abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was taken to the Polk County Jail, where he posted bail and was released. The victim dog, Zeus, survived thanks only to the immediate intervention of authorities and doctors. Zeus continues to receive medical care and rehabilitation from his severe injuries. Zeus was stabbed multiple times in the chest and side, giving him several life-threatening injuries.

The alleged abuser, Michael Mitchell, 31, is facing one animal abuse charge, but as you know, Iowa has been lenient in the past on those who abuse animals. I am calling on you to make sure that Michael Mitchell can do no further harm to animals. I demand that you seek the maximum penalty possible and ban him from owning or working with animals in the future if he is convicted.

Sincerely,
