Target: Loyola University Chicago
Goal: Commend efforts to eliminate plastic bottle waste on campus through conversion to glass containers
In the Fall of 2011, Loyola University Chicago encouraged incoming freshmen to utilize reusable containers by providing them with reusable bottles and installing numerous fill-up stations around campus. Now the school has banned the sale of bottled water in its cafeterias and vending machines altogether. Sign this petition thanking the school for its conservative use of plastic materials in recognition that its negative environmental impact on the Earth is controllable, and ought to be minimal.
Loyola is the first Illinois school to do this, hopefully inciting the same action from other schools and organizations, public and private. A number of smaller schools throughout the country have implemented full or partial plastic bottle bans, indicating the desire of students and administrators to be conscious of their influence on the Earth and its livelihood.
The school does not intend to lower the amount of water intake among students and acknowledges its health benefits, already having banned energy drinks. Fill stations allow students to consume fresh water from Lake Michigan, the school’s backyard. Thank Loyola for this impetus and help bring their work to the attention of others who may then follow suit.
Dear Loyola University Chicago,
Thank you for renewing your commitment to greening campus practices by banning bottled water in dining halls and vending machines. Your distribution of resuable bottles and the installation of filling stations throughout campus are sure to instill smarter student behavior that will put less stress on landfills and recycling operatives. Please continue educating your students, faculty, and administrators to be mindful of their impact and direct effect on the land they use.
It is my hope that other campuses, organizations, and government entities follow your lead and encourage widespread use of tap water and reusable bottles. Consumer consciousness of this sort is the only thing that can ensure the future of our earth. Thank you again for your responsibility in assuring a green future in Chicago and the world.
