Tell Major Television Networks to Hire Fact-Checkers for Presidential Debates

Target: ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, CNN, and MSNBC Networks

Goal: Hire fact-checkers for the upcoming presidential debates and all other political discussions to prevent Americans from being mislead by false statements.

With rumors and false advertisements screaming at us from billboards and magazine covers, today’s modern technological world makes access to truthful information particularly difficult. Politics, especially, are plagued with lies and poorly contextualized untruths that serve to hurt the public rather than help them make informed decisions. In order to better our information system as it relates to politics, fact-checkers could play a potentially beneficial role, if the public wishes them to. They should assist the public during upcoming political debates and, during commercials, fact-check the speakers’ answers to ensure that viewers are receiving the truth as opposed to the back-handed bias that is so prevalent in political discussions today.

The job of the fact-checker in this context is to check factual assertions made by each politician during the commercials of the debate, and this job would be beneficial for the upcoming presidential debates. Fact-checkers would research all controversial statements made by politicians during the debate and then share their information, if a statement is found to be false, in the following segment of the show. This would prevent politicians from making blatantly false remarks and getting away with it on public television. It is bad enough that viewers are constantly exposed to lies, but that these lies are never combated with facts is an even bigger problem.

Sadly, fact-checkers are not often hired for work because their job is difficult as well as time consuming. This is not an adequate reason to leave their vital skills out of the political realm, as they could mitigate the issues of propaganda and blatant lies. While certain Republican leaders have voiced that their campaign will not be “dictated by fact checkers,” society deserves to be informed about facts instead of being bombarded with fiction. Fact checking should play a prominent role in all political debates.

Demand that fact-checkers are hired and used in upcoming political debates. This country has had its fill of fabrication from politicians, and it is time for a change.

Dear Television Network,

I implore you to hire fact-checkers for upcoming political debates. Too often, society is misled by political lies. These lies come straight from the mouths of our politicians, and despite such untruths, the facts are rarely, if ever, made publicly known. If fact-checkers were used in political debates to provide viewers with truthful distinction between fact and fiction, we would be better off. It is unfair that viewers have to shuffle through unending piles of information just to find out the truth.

Fact-checkers would be responsible for correcting untrue political statements during the debate itself. There is no better time than the present to provide American citizens with accurate information concerning our economy, policies, historical ongoings, and other important information that they use to form opinions and make decisions about future ballots. Please hire fact-checkers for these debates.
