Disallow Use of Identification Chips on Students in a Texas School District

Target: Texas Governor Rick Perry

Goal: Do not require students in the North Independent School District to wear radio frequency identification (RFID) chips around their necks while in school

A Texas school district is currently requiring students to wear lanyards containing radio frequency identification (RFID) chips around their necks at all times while at school. The district claims this is being done to ensure student safety since the chips will provide administrators with detailed knowledge of students’ whereabouts while on district campus. However, closer examination of this case reveals this all comes down to money. The schools receive federal funding based on student attendance, and with this program students don’t have to be in their seat when attendance is taken to be counted as present. They just have to be on campus, which without RFID chips, administrators would not be able to track. These RFID tags dehumanize children and it’s all in the name of federal funding. Act now and prevent this from continuing further.

District administrators in this case are hiding behind the guise of safety since students that wear these RFID lanyards will have their location tracked at all times. However, critics rightfully point out that the RFID chips don’t have any on board encryption which makes them vulnerable to manipulation. Someone with basic technology know-how would be able to clone another student’s card, or clone their own card, which would allow them to be counted present when they really aren’t.

What this is really about is districts receive funding based on average student attendance, and these chips will count students present when they’re not in their seats or classrooms. It’s a cheap ploy to grab more dollars from the federal government, and it’s all being done at the expense of students’ privacy and humanity. Reducing children to serial numbers cataloged in a database simply to boost government funds isn’t a good idea. Once again, those in power are taking away freedom in the name of safety and it’s really about money. Don’t allow these Texas students to be dehumanized so districts can gain an extra buck. Act now and prevent this from continuing.

Dear Governor Perry,

We are writing to express our disapproval of the employment of the RFID tagging of students in the Northside Independent School District. We understand  that this is supposed to be done for reasons of safety. Tracking a student’s location at all times sounds safe. However, we know that school districts are allocated federal funding based on average student attendance, and we understand that these tags will count students as present simply if they are on campus and not necessarily in the classroom where they are supposed to be.

These tags dehumanize students and reduce them to serial numbers, and all in the name of federal dollars. We do not need school administrators, or any part of the government to be constantly aware of our location. We call on you to end this program as it is nothing more than a money grab. Restore the dignity and humanity of these students and do not allow them to be forced to wear these RFID lanyards.
