Support Family Engagement in Washington Public Schools

Parent and Child

Target: Washington State Legislature

Goal: Create guidelines and standards for family engagement in all Washington public schools

Family engagement in the education of students carries invaluable benefits for families, teachers, and namely students, and thus its integration must be actively promoted throughout the public school system. With constructive support and involvement of parents and other family members in a student’s education, students have better success in school, from attendance and behavior, to test scores and graduation. Currently, there are few methodological guidelines or standards by which to implement this goal; family engagement varies widely and needs much improvement.

The Washington State Parents and Teachers Association places high value on creating meaningful family engagement, listing this goal among legislative priorities for the coming year. Steps would include a partnership document that works towards equality of opportunity for students, defining practices, policies, as well as parent, teacher and student goals and evaluation procedures. Family engagement would be required in teacher and school official training, and curricula. Finally, families would have access to and involvement in educational plans and assessments.

Such guidelines, along with accountability would ensure fair and efficient use of funding and equal opportunity for students throughout Washington public schools. When family engagement is structurally encouraged in every school, student success improves even in the face of economic obstacles. Please join the Washington State PTA in supporting legislation to systemically introduce specific guidelines and standards for family engagement in schools.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Washington Legislators,

Although family engagement is vital for the success of many students, Washington public schools currently have few guidelines or standards by which to constructively promote it. Schools involve parents to varying degrees, and receive varying amounts of funding for this end with little structure by which to efficiently direct and utilize it. The Washington State PTA has proposed in depth guidelines for legislation which would promote and integrate family engagement into schools, and student’s education.

Under such legislation, a document would set goals and assessment tools, along with practices and policies for successful implementation. Curricula and teacher training would be required to incorporate family acknowledgement, involvement and accountability. Further, students, parents and teachers would be involved and informed at all levels, including assessment.

Please support the effort of the Washington State PTA to improve every public school and enhance equal opportunity for students despite obstacles, by passing legislation that would actively and constructively promote family engagement in schools.

Sincerely,
